The fate of the Knights of the Old Republic Remake remains in flux, much like the Force itself, and conflicting reports from trusted sources have recently left us contemplating a turn to the dark side. Now, a Disney executive has thrown further fuel on the flames.
Speaking to Axios, Disney head of gaming Sean Shoptaw was asked about the status of the long-wished for remake. Maddeningly, he said: "Not a lot I can say on that point for some hopefully obvious reasons, but KOTOR is obviously an incredibly popular game, one that we are incredibly proud of and think that there's still a lot of demand for. I'll leave it there."
For those keeping score at home, the troubled PS5 console exclusive has been kicking around for years now, passing from Aspyr to Saber Interactive, both developers owned by the currently crumbling Embracer Group. Matters looked even worse when Sony started scrubbing the game's trailer from various social media accounts, but the company later clarified this was due to a music licensing issue.
As things stand, depending on whether you believe Jeff Grub or Jason Schreier, the project is either completely dead or being worked on by a skeleton crew respectively. How optimistic are you the KOTOR Remake will ever see the light of day? Let us know in the comments section below.

All signs point to it being in development.
If it's not then Disney is at least still shopping around for a developer.
I'll take just a PS5 port of the original game at this point. Don't even need the remake.
That's a bit like saying "There is still a lot of demand for oxygen." One of the few games I'd be happy with a port of to be honest.
This is definitely gonna be either
1. Rebooted by Disney and given to a more seasoned studio
2. The rights will be held on by Embracer Group so tightly that they throw literally every studio at it just to make it work
No matter what the original concept of the game is definitely dead
I dont know why Sony doesn’t just bring the project in house and complete it. Seeing as Microsoft purchased many of the studios that make western rpgs it would be great if Sony can add this one to their line up.
I think it will come eventually but EG will keep passing the game to another studio until they find one suitable or Disney is trying to end their agreement so they can pass it onto another themselves.
Disney would be happy to take their cut if it’s done. But are unlikely to make the investment and take the risk.
At this stage if I wanted to play it I’d get my old cd’s out. Along with Simpson’s Hit and Run, and No One Lives Forever 1 & 2
ONLY if you do it right. Not a cash grab or a poor port, respect the source material.
@Northern_munkey Honestly I think it needs far more than a port. I played it recently, and gave up, as so much of it's game design is dated, especially combat and quality of life features. It felt like it dragged a lot and I stopped before I ruined my rose tinted memories. Needs a much larger remake imho, but it has to be done right.
At this point, I’ll assume it’s dead until I see definitive proof that says otherwise. There’s too little to go on to really justify doing otherwise.
That said, despite being a fan of the original, I wouldn’t be too fussed if it doesn’t work out. Not only is the original available on almost every system (PS5 being one of the few that doesn’t) but also, with so little information on what the remake would do, I’m having a hard time imagining what they could do to improve the overall experience, outside update the game’s models to look more realistic/detailed.
@DrVenture69 aahhhhh No One Lives Forever 😍😍 loved those games, especially NOLF 2 A Spy In H.A.R.M.S Way ....such memories
I wonder if Embracer can sell off the license rights to another studio, or if Disney has any power to do anything? Can't help but feel it would be in better hands with another dev team.
Yes, the demand IS there. Where's the supply tho?
@KingPev , they’ve aged a bit now but they’re still good fun, very Austin Powers. I think they’re still around on certain “sites” where the “wares” have been “abandoned” 😉
I think it will still happen someday. Now is that day any time soon? I would say no but I doubt they will just give up all together. Fans would be better off just not thinking about it for the time being.
Sometimes dead is better.
Kotor is one of the best Star Wars.
The remake announcement was one of the things that made me but my PS5.
Cannot wait for the remake if it is actually still development and not cancelled
